Legendary Sand
Sacred Ground
Chimayo
Chimayo, New Mexico:  the site of El Santuario de Chimayo, a chapel and shrine dating back  to the early 1800s.  Built on ground that possesses curative powers - this sacred earth is said to have restored health to many people

According to local Legend, this has always been holy ground. Hundreds of years before the Chimayo chapel was built, the site was sacred ground for Native Americans.

For the Tewa Indians, this was a site of Fire and Steam, a place where the ancient ones breathed flame and hot water from the earth leaving a sacred mud pool   Their creation stories tell of Twin War Brothers who slew the evil giant, Yeitso, and great changes took place in the earth beneath them.  Fire, smoke and boiling water to burst out. As the turbulence calmed, the spouting geysers became New Mexico's muddy, steaming hot springs which the Tewa people called, "Tsimajopokwi".
The hot springs that bubbled here have long since dried up, yet the sand/dust that remains is said to carry the energies of hope, healing  and miracles.

Mystery & Miracles

The story  continues . . .  One holy night in early1800's a  friar,
Don Bernardo Abeyta, was waking through the New Mexico
landscape of Chimayo when he saw a light coming from up
was waking through the New Mexico

from the ground.
Further investigation reveled a cross. Not an ordinary cross,
this cross had a will of it's own... three times it was transported
to  nearby Church and three times it disappeared  and reappeared
at its point of origin. It was finally decided that a chapel should
be constructed in Chimayo  to house the cross.
Then the miracles and healings began

The Lourdes of America

Three Hundred Thousand People visit this tiny village every
year.  During Holy week thirty thousand people arrive on foot
as part of a traditional pilgrimage.  It is a sacred destination
and place of miracles.

The process of a pilgrimage, an intentional journey traditionally on foot, is to distance the self from the distractions of everyday living.  Each step of the journey brings one closer to a state of  pure essence.  The journey allows you to experience who you are without the costumes of home, career, hobbies, and passions.

At destination -  the pilgrim in a state of purity, can release
hopelessness and open to healing miracles.

El Pocito -Room of Miracles

A small room at the back of the chapel is called El Pocito. It is also known
as the "Room of Miracles." Discarded canes, braces, wheelchairs, and
messages of thanksgiving hang from the adobe walls.
There is a round hole in the floor, through which people scoop out
some of the sand. Some kneel and kiss the earth; some rub it on
their bodies or onto photographs of family members too ill
to travel. Most people carry home a small bagful. Some even eat
a little of the sand.

Is it in the Sand or in the Faith?

The sand pit in the Chapel is replenished and blessed periodically from the bank of the Rio Santa Cruz.
There is no scientific reason for the dirt to produce miracles, indeed to my mind , miracles come from the heart and beliefs of us. Still I'm curious -- how will it feel to be in a place where so many have come with hope in their hearts.   This is a place that echoes with decades of people who have come to let go of despair and create a space for miracles.  What despairs have You been carrying that you might leave here in Chimayo?
